Wild Goose Vineyards 2020 Red Horizon - 89pts

Wild Goose Vineyards 2020 Red Horizon (Okanagan Valley) BC

Availability: Direct from winery here
Cost: $31.99 + taxes
Alcohol: 14.5%
Date Tasted: July 5th, 2023

Tasting Notes: An engaging, proprietary blend of Merlot (58%), Petite Verdot (13%), Cabernet Sauvignon (13%) and lesser parts of Malbec, Cabernet Franc and German cross called Dunkelfelder. The nose is rich and joyful with ripe red and black fruit, vanilla bean and sweet incense. The palate takes a dramatic turn towards smoky-dusty-tarry land by way of the most delicious of routes with the fruit along for the ride, but playing quietly in the backseat.

A pleasantly complex and unique blend that is ready to be enjoyed in its youth while your big, tannin-heavy reds mellow in your cellar (or closet). Drink now-2025.

Lots to like here at this price point with many pairing options and no chewy, residual sugar to deal with. Lamb with mint sauce or lean cuts of beef are a good start or go for something more bold like duck served with a wild berry reduction. Enjoy this one in its youth. Drink now-2025.

Tasting Notes: Okanagan Falls' Wild Goose Vineyards, mostly known for its delicious single vineyard aromatic white wines and the uber-popular white blend "Autumn Gold", has been working with consultants to improve the red wine portion of their portfolio. This reserve Merlot is the result and shows great progress over previous vintages offering a lovely, fine tannin texture on the dark berry and oak spice palate while the nose reflects the cool vintage with bright, wild berry fruit and savoury vanilla and light cocoa aromas. The palate-cleansing acid makes this Merlot a great companion for the dinner table with tomato-based dishes making the most obvious pairing. Drink 2013-2015.

Wild Goose Vineyards 2008 Gewurztraminer - 89pts

Wild Goose Vineyards 2008 Gewurztraminer (Okanagan Falls) Okanagan Valley - BC

Availability: Direct from winery. Private wine shops

Price: $19.99 (winery gate), $21.99 (Liberty Wines)

Alcohol: 13.4%

Date Tasted: January 31st, 2010

Tasting Notes: Another excellent Gewurztraminer from BC's Okanagan Valley that offers intense aromas and flavours with yummy spice and everything nice.

Sweet apricot, mandarin, granny-smith apples and vanilla aromas dominate the nose while slate mineral notes add a sense of place and maturity to the bouquet. The flavours, mostly, mirror the aroma notes and introduce a crisp acidity which balances nicely with the off-dry palate.

This isn't a wine to buy and hold but rather one to enjoy over the next two years (2010-2012). Pair it with a butter-lettuce salad with dried fruits, goats cheese and a mildly-tangy dressing or sip it solo, it can hold its own.

Wild Goose Vineyards 2006 Merlot - 87pts

Wild Goose Vineyards 2006 Merlot (Okanagan Falls) Okanagan Valley - BC

Availability: VQA Stores and direct from winery

Cost: $17.99 (The Wine Emporium)

Alcohol: 14.5%

Date Tasted: October 17th, 2009

Tasting Notes: A smooth-talking, fruit-forward Merlot from Okanagan Falls producer Wild Goose Vineyards. The firm is perhaps best known for excellent white single-varietal and blends, but this Merlot proves they are very capable at making reds as well.

This wine has typical Merlot aromas of plum and cassis aromas with flavours of dark-berries, chocolate and plums with medium acidity. Where this wine excels, especially at the under-$20 price point, is with its impressively smooth tannins that speaks to its refinement and quality. Drink 2009-2011. - LC
