Majella Wines 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon - 89pts

Majella Wines 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon (Coonawarra) South Australia - Australia

Availability: BCLDB stores
Cost: $39.99
Alcohol: 14.5%
Date Tasted: June 15th, 2010

Tasting Notes: A classic Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon from South Australia producer Majella Wines. An intense and elegant nose of cassis, eucalyptus, vanilla, oak, green pepper and spices. Followed by cassis, blueberry, vanilla, oak and mint flavours with medium-plus tannins and a smoky-textured, dry palate.

This is a solid wine that has aged nicely and presents great typicity for the region. Drink 2010-2014.

Wynns Coonawarra Estate 2005 Cabernet Shiraz Merlot - 85pts

Wynns Coonawarra Estate 2005 Cabernet Shiraz Merlot (Coonawarra) South Australia - Australia

Availability: Widely available

Cost: $21.99

Alcohol: 13.4%

Date Tasted: March 4th, 2010

Tasting Notes: I fear this wine has suffered from over-cellaring on my part - I missed it's peak which likely would have been in late 2008. A lesson to all, make sure the wines you lay down to age are truly age-worthy. Today, the wine tastes a little tired and muted. No longer a great example of a Cab-Shiraz-Merlot blend from a top Australian producer, Wynns Coonawarra Estate. Yet, it still scores reasonably well considering.

Inky-ruby in colour, this wine offers good fruit aromas of mixed berries and dark cherries with vegetable notes of green peppers. The palate has high acidity that cuts the fruit flavours and mutes the concentration and finish. Pair with food to make the most of this wine; grilled meats are on order. Drink now.

Majella Wines 2005 Sparklng Shiraz - 88pts

Majella Wines 2005 Sparkling Shiraz (Coonawarra) South Australia - Australia

Availability: Limited quantities available at BCLDB stores

Cost: $39.99

Alcohol: 14%

Date Tasted: October 5th, 2009

Tasting Notes: South Australia producer Majella Wines has created a unique and delicious treat with their Sparkling Shiraz. This inky-ruby coloured Shiraz with persistent medium bubbles is made in the traditional method of sparkling wine and spends 48 months aging on the lees . Vintage Port is added during the dosage step which gives the wine its off-dry sweetness.
Developing aromas of leather, cassis, cigar box and loads of licorice create an intriguing bouquet for the nose to enjoy. Followed on the palate with flavours of leather, fig, cherry, tobacco, candied fruit with medium tannins and acidity. The high alcohol is masked by the depth of complexity this wine offers. Sealed with a crown cap, this high quality wine is approachable now and will hold for up to ten years in the cellar. - LC
