Township 7 Vineyards and Winery 2009 Syrah - 89pts

Township 7 Vineyards and Winery 2009 Syrah (Naramata Bench) Okanagan Valley - BC

Availability: Direct from the winery and VQA Stores
Cost: $24.99
Alcohol: 13.5%
Production: 400 cases
Date Tasted: January 24, 2012

Tasting Notes: A crowd-pleasing BC Syrah that delivers the big cherry cola and black pepper characters that one expects and desires from the Rhone Valley grape with a solid structure of robust tannins and balanced acidity. The winery credits Côte-Rôtie as inspiration for the style of Syrah on offer with 8% Viognier added during the fermentation process adding nice floral notes to the lively nose, yet the wine is not terroir-driven like those of the Northern Rhone appellation. Nor is it a jammy, over-done Aussie Shiraz. Simply put, it's a ripe, juicy, quality Syrah that shows good typicity for the region but one that lacks the depth and complexity of the regional standouts from La Frenz and Sandhill. Drink now-2015.

Township 7 Vineyards and Winery 2009 Sauvignon Blanc - 89pts

Township 7 Vineyards and Winery 2009 Sauvignon Blanc (Naramata Bench) Okanagan Valley - BC

Availability: BCLDB stores
Cost: $17.49-$18.99
Alcohol: 13%
Production: 639 cases
Date Tasted: August 1st, 2011

Tasting Notes: This is a delicious Sauvignon Blanc done in a weighty (almost chewy), Californian Fumé Blanc style, bursting with tropical and citrus fruit aromas on the nose. The dry, rich palate follows with intense pineapple, passion fruit, lemon-lime, melon and white pepper flavours.

Produced from fruit sourced from southern Okanagan Valley vineyards near Oliver and Osoyoos which benefited from the hot, late summer of the 2009 vintage, yet retained enough acid to create a refreshing, long finish with lingering mineral notes and spice. Has the weight and texture to hold another 2, even 3 more years, but I'm not sure why you'd want that lush fruit to sit around waiting to be opened. Drink 2011-2013.

Township 7 Vineyards and Winery 2006 The Black Dog - 89+pts

Township 7 Vineyards and Winery 2006 Reserve Merlot (Naramata Bench) Okanagan Valley - BC

Availability: Sold out
Cost: $35
Alcohol: 14.8%
Production: 54 cases
Date Tasted: November 22nd, 2010

Tasting Notes: The label may say "Reserve Merlot" but The Black Dog is really a proprietary blend assembled by Township 7's winemaker, Bradley Cooper, which comprises 44% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc, 5% Malbec and 1% Syrah (for good measure). Aged in new oak (both French and American) for a whopping 40 months, the wine reminds me of a Rioja Reserva crossed with old, worn furniture - great character, but a little rough around the edges.

The character comes from a wonderfully expressive nose of dark fruits, smoky oak, sweet fruit puree and a touch of mint. Loads of character on the dry palate as well with cigar box, leather, dark fruits and major oak flavours. The balance is a bit rough and leans towards the bitter end of the scale but certainly a unique wine worth sourcing. Drink 2011-2016.

Given time the nose opens in the glass to reveal its complexity of aromas ranging from orange blossoms to rose petals with a nice spicy undertone. Good acidity and strong mineral notes with tropical fruit flavours. Medium-plus finish and well balaned.

Township 7 Vineyards and Winery 2006 Merlot - 87pts

Township 7 Vineyards & Winery 2006 Merlot (Penticton) Okanagan Valley - BC Wine

Availability: Direct from winery, BCLDB stores

Cost: $24.99

Alcohol: 13.9%

Date Tasted: October 17th, 2009

Tasting Notes: Naramata producer Township 7 Vineyards & Winery have produced a Merlot that is both a cheerful, fruit-forward charmer and a structured, smokey sex-kitten. Aromas of dark fruit, plums and baking spice followed by flavours of black cherry, smoke, cigar box and dark chocolate on the palate.

Visit the firm at two BC locations: Naramata and Langley. While visiting the winery, treat yourself to a bar of "Salt & Pepper" dark chocolate to match with this Merlot. The pairing makes for a fantastic desert. Drink 2009-2012. - LC
