Tasting Notes: Chilean producer Carmen offers a wide variety of wines in flights of varying quality and prestige. This Merlot, from their entry-level flight of "Classic" wines is a real bargain at $12-14 and will make a great companion to your mid-week, unpretentious dinner of peppercorn-encrusted grilled meats.
This dark-garnet coloured wine offers intense aromas of sweet bell peppers, chocolate covered cherries, pencil shavings, nibs and crayons when decanted for two-plus hours. On the medium-plus bodied palate you will find flavours of cassis, black pepper, roasted coffee, bitter chocolate and pencil shavings accompanying medium acid and tannis. Good length to the finish of this Merlot that has 15% Cabernet Sauvignon added to round out the flavours and add structure to the tannins. Drink now. - LC
