Availability: (Upon release) Direct from winery here, BCLDB and VQA stores
Cost: $16.99 + taxes
Alcohol: 13.5%
Date Tasted: June 27th, 2017
Tasting Notes: A full-ish bodied, opulent Goo with a nice backbone of mannered, mineral-y-citrus acidity and draped with Tropical and stone fruit flavours and both fresh and canned peach notes. Sourced from the winery's home vineyard along the Golden Mile Bench, this Gewurztraminer needs some time in the glass to open up (and warm-up if served too chilled) to release its wonderfully aromatic and ripe, peach juice scented nose. Finish is long and balanced with lingering hints of citrus rind, spice and alcohol. Drink now-2019.

Black Hills Estate Winery 2015 Cellar Hand Punch Down Red - 90pts
Black Hills Estate Winery 2015 Cellar Hand Red (Black Sage Bench) Okanagan Valley - BC
Availability: Widely available at BCLDB stores and direct from the winery here
Cost: $24.90 + taxes
Alcohol: 14.1%
Date Tasted: June 15th, 2017
Tasting Notes: This is the best vintage of Black Hills' Cellar Hand Red to date. The 2015 edition is a traditional, Meritage-style blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc (percentages withheld) which benefited from a long and dry growing season, producing excellent ripeness and intensely flavourful fruit.
This intensity is on display throughout the Cellar Hand Red: dark fruit, violets, toasted oak, licorice, vanilla, coffee grinds and a hint of eucalyptus grace the generous nose and the lip-smacking, fine-tannin palate where spice and blood orange notes linger on the memorable finish. Ready to go now, though, this over-achiever should hold beautifully for a few years while you wait for your Nota Bene to mature. Drink now-2020.

LaStella 2014 Maestoso "Solo" Merlot - 92+pts
LaStella 2014 Maestoso "Solo" Merlot (Osoyoos Lake Bench) Okanagan Valley - BC
Availability: Direct from the winery here
Cost: $89.99 + taxes
Alcohol: 14.9%
Production: 217 cases
Date Tasted: June 10th, 2017
@LaStellaWinery
Tasting Notes: Can Okanagan Merlot perform as a solo act? LaStella's Maestoso certainly suggests it can, in the right circumstance. The 2014 edition is quite masculine and incredibly dense with concentrated blackberry purée and kirsch aromas and flavours and plenty of supporting notes from extended French oak contact and from the vineyard sites themselves: fine, grippy tannins, vanilla, licorice, charred oak, spices, herbs and a touch of minerals.
This full-bodied, hedonistic wine should age gracefully, therefore, ideally, give it another 2-3 years of bottle age prior to opening. Drink 2019-2024+.
